Cybercrime Stats

Computer crime is one of the newer - and fastest growing - forms of fraud, whether online or as a result of stolen hardware. Use caution when making online purchases and avoid paying direct by credit card, whenever possible. Identity fraud can be devastating, so keep these stats in mind before releasing financial data - both business and personal - into cyberspace.
  • More than 5% of Internet Transactions are Fraudulent
  • Only 6% of all Websites are considered Secure by Experts (typically, those of big financial institutions - at an estimated $50 million for initiating proper security measures)
  • 10,000 Web Sites are added to the I-net each day - 94% of them are not secure
  • Total Losses from Computer-Related Crime Exceeded $250 million in 2000, according to the FBI (double the amount from the previous year)
  • Computer Theft is Second only to Auto Theft
  • 6 of 10 American Companies & Government Agencies have been Hacked (including the FBI, CIA, Secret Service and White House)
  • On-Line Auctions are the #1 Source of I-net Crime
